What's the process of getting a dental implant?
The dental implant process usually takes several months, allowing time for proper healing and long-term success. Each stage plays an important role in restoring your smile.
Step 1: The Initial Consultation
At your first visit, your dentist will:
Review your health history and treatment goals
Examine your teeth, gums, and jawbone health
Take X-rays to determine the best treatment plan
Step 2: Implant Post Placement
The next step is to surgically place the titanium implant post into the jawbone, which acts as the new tooth root. Here’s how it works:
The dentist numbs the area for comfort
Any areas of decay or weak bone are treated as needed
The titanium implant post is inserted into the jawbone
The area is stitched closed to allow healing
The jawbone then fuses with the implant in a process called osseointegration, which typically takes 2-6 months.
Step 3: Abutment Placement
Once the implant has healed, the dentist will:
Reopen the gum tissue above the implant
Place the abutment, a small connector piece that attaches the crown to the implant
Close the tissue around the abutment while it heals
Step 4: Crown Placement
After the gums heal around the abutment, the dentist attaches a custom crown. This crown is designed from impressions of your teeth and matched in color and size to blend naturally with your smile.
Step 5: Aftercare and Maintenance
To protect your new implant, you should:
Brush and floss daily
Visit your dentist regularly for checkups
Avoid smoking and limit hard or sticky foods
