What is the difference between full and partial dentures?

Dentures are an effective option for restoring the look and function of natural teeth. While full dentures replace all of the teeth, partial dentures replace groups of missing teeth.

Full Dentures

Full dentures are for people who have lost all of their upper or lower teeth. They are made of gum-colored acrylic that is set with artificial teeth, replacing the entire arch of missing teeth.

Using suction or denture adhesive, the dentures rest on the gums. They also use the roof of the mouth or lower jawbone ridge for support.

To maintain oral health and prevent odor or bacterial buildup, full dentures should be removed and cleaned daily.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are best for patients who still have some healthy natural teeth. They fill in gaps caused by missing teeth and prevent surrounding teeth from shifting out of place.

Partial dentures typically consist of artificial teeth attached to a metal or acrylic framework. They stay in place with small metal clasps or precision attachments that connect to nearby natural teeth.

Like full dentures, partials should be removed and cleaned daily to keep the mouth healthy and the dentures in good condition.

Which Option Is Right For You?

The denture solution that is right for you depends on:

  • Your overall health. If you have advanced gum disease or many missing teeth, full dentures are the best option.

  • Teeth condition. If your remaining teeth are healthy, partial dentures are often the right choice.

  • Budget. With good oral health and only a few missing teeth, partial dentures are usually more affordable.

  • Number of missing teeth. Partial dentures are only an option if some of your natural teeth remain.
