How soon can I eat after getting a filling?
After a filling, many patients wonder how long they should wait before eating. The answer depends on the type of filling and how your mouth feels after the procedure.
Type of Filling
Some fillings harden right away, while others take a whole day to harden completely, which may affect your ability to eat, at least on the side of the mouth with the filling.
Composite Resin Fillings
Composite fillings harden completely after the UV light is applied. Because the filling sets immediately, you can eat right after the appointment. However, your dentist may recommend waiting for a few hours before you chew on the side of the filling.
Silver Amalgam Fillings
Silver amalgam fillings require approximately 24 hours to set and reach their full strength, so a dentist may recommend waiting 24 hours before you can chew on the side of the mouth with the filling.
Comfort After Treatment
Some people may experience discomfort after getting a tooth filled, which may affect their appetite for a few hours afterward. The gums may be irritated, and the mouth may be sore.
To minimize discomfort:
Bite carefully to avoid putting excess pressure on the teeth.
Chew on the opposite side of the filling.
Chew slowly.
Foods to Avoid After a Filling
To avoid irritation around the filling, keep away from these foods for a few days:
Hot or cold foods and drinks (coffee, ice cream)
Hard foods (nuts, candy)
Sticky foods (caramel, peanut butter)
Sugary foods and drinks (cake, soda) which can cause sensitivity
