Is sleep dentistry safe?
Does the thought of going to the dentist make you extremely nervous? Sleep dentistry, also known as sedation dentistry, is when medicine is used to sedate patients and help them relax during their dental procedures. It can be a great option for those with dental anxiety, sensitive gag reflexes, or extreme teeth sensitivity. But is it safe?
With a trained and qualified healthcare provider who is informed of the patient’s medical history, sleep dentistry is a convenient and safe option. This option often provides a positive experience for the patient as well as the staff. The patient is in less pain, more comfortable, and calm. The staff can work faster when a patient is sedated, which can mean less appointments.
Types of sedation dentistry
Depending on the dental office, the dentist’s certifications, and the type of procedure, sedation levels can range from minimal to general anesthesia. The most common forms of sedation are nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, or intravenous sedation:
Nitrous oxide. Known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a mild form of sedation administered through a mask.
Oral conscious sedation. With oral conscious sedation, a dentist will give the patient sedative medication, often in pill form before their appointment. This sedation type is stronger, so patients will need someone to drive them home after their appointment.
Intravenous sedation. The deepest sedation form of the three, intravenous sedation, is administered through your bloodstream in an IV line. This sedation is very strong and causes most people to fall asleep.
Risks of sedation dentistry
As with most medical practices, there are minimal risks for sedation dentistry, most of which are short-term. These include:
Lingering drowsiness
Dry mouth
Nausea
Headaches
Allergic reactions
