How long does a tooth extraction take?

During a tooth extraction, a dentist removes teeth that are severely damaged, decayed, crowded, or causing other problems. Though tooth extractions can be intimidating, they are often a quicker process than many people realize. The time that an extraction takes depends on the difficulty of the procedure, but most extractions take a few minutes to an hour.

Other factors can impact extraction difficulty. These include:

  • The number of teeth being removed.

  • The tooth’s number of roots (the more roots means a more complex extraction).

  • The amount of bleeding during the process.

  • Whether stitches are required.

  • An individual’s overall health.

  • The quality of post-operative care.

Simple vs. Complex Extractions

The duration also depends on whether the procedure is a simple or complicated extraction.

  • Simple Extractions: A dentist performs a simple extraction when a visible tooth is removed from the mouth. Extractions like these are quicker and less invasive, often taking only minutes.

  • Complicated Extractions: People get complicated extractions when a broken or impacted tooth that isn’t fully visible or is otherwise stuck in the jawbone is removed. This type of procedure can require an anesthetic, which means that it will take longer and require more complex treatment.

What to Expect During the Process

An extraction starts with the dentist numbing the area around the tooth being extracted. They then remove the tooth from the jawbone with special tools. Next, they apply gauze to the wound to promote the formation of a blood clot to stop the bleeding and protect the socket. The healing process typically takes a few days to a few weeks.
