When is a tooth extraction necessary?

With the quality dental care available today, tooth extractions are much less common than they used to be. However, there are scenarios in which extraction is the best or only option. Here at Midland Family Dental, we want you to feel comfortable and informed about tooth extractions, which are generally necessary in the following scenarios:

Disease

If dental infections are left untreated and cause significant decay to a tooth or the surrounding bone and gums, extraction may be necessary. Dental infections are also dangerous because they can spread to other parts of the body. Visiting the dentist at the first signs of infection can help prevent the need for extraction and limit spreading.

Impacted Teeth

An impacted tooth is one that is blocked from breaking through the gums. A common example of this is wisdom teeth (although not all wisdom teeth are impacted). Impacted teeth are often removed to avoid potential complications, including:

  • Discomfort

  • Crowding

  • Infection

  • Decay

  • Gum disease

Crowding

If a tooth is crowding surrounding teeth in a way that negatively impacts a patient’s oral health, extraction may be the best option. Orthodontic treatment can also be an option in some cases. Your dentist can help you determine what’s best for your situation.

Cost

Restorative dental work—including root canals, crowns, bridges, and veneers—can be expensive. For some patients, it may be better to have the affected tooth extracted immediately and restored at a later date. This option is not ideal, but it may be necessary in some cases.

Trauma

If a patient is in an accident and needs emergency dental care, extractions may be necessary. Restorative procedures are generally used first if possible.
