How soon after oral surgery can I eat solid foods?

Proper healing is one of the most important parts of oral surgery, and what you eat after surgery can directly impact how well you heal.

Follow this timeline for reintroducing solid foods to promote recovery:

  • The first 24 hours: Avoid eating solid foods directly after the extraction, and instead stick to liquids and very soft foods that will not disrupt the healing process. Ensure that the foods are cool or lukewarm.

  • Days 2-7: You can gradually begin eating more solid foods on days 2-7, focusing on things you don’t have to chew or bite. Prioritize soft foods that aren’t too hot or spicy. You can try things like eggs, soft fruits, and cooked vegetables.

  • After 1 Week: As the site heals properly, you will be cleared to add more solid foods back into your meals. It is still best to avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for a few more weeks. You should also try to chew on the opposite side of the extraction to keep the site unbothered.

What to Eat in the Meantime

Some great options for soft foods include:

  • Smoothies: Blended fruit or vegetable smoothies are a quick and delicious way to get nutrients without having to chew. They can also feel nice and cool on your sore gums.

  • Yogurt: Yogurt is also cool and soft and is a good source of probiotics and protein.

  • Soups and Broths: Soups and broths with no chunks are a great option because you don’t need to chew them and can swallow them easily.

  • Applesauce: Applesauce is a great soft option that won’t put pressure on the extraction sites.

Foods to Avoid

It is crucial to avoid foods that will aggravate the extraction site and hinder the healing process.

Stay away from:

  • Spicy foods

  • Crunchy snacks like chips and pretzels

  • Hot beverages like coffee and tea
