How long does a filling last?
Unfortunately, we’ve all experienced getting a cavity filled—some of us many times. Fillings are made to be durable, but they don’t last forever. Here’s what you need to know about the life expectancy of a filling and when to get it replaced.
Filling Types and Durability
How long a filling lasts depends on the material it’s made of. Fillings are most commonly made from one of three substances: gold, amalgam (a mixture of metals that appears silver), or composite resin (tooth-colored material).
Gold fillings are extremely durable and can last for over 20 years with proper care. However, due to their durability, they are generally more expensive. They are also less aesthetically pleasing to most patients.
Amalgam fillings are also very durable. They can last for 15–20 years with proper care, and they are considerably less expensive than gold fillings. However, many patients dislike the look of silver fillings.
Composite fillings are the most common choice for patients. They are less durable than gold or amalgam fillings, but they can still last for over 10 years. Composite fillings resemble natural teeth and are the least noticeable, which makes them a popular option for aesthetic reasons.
When does a filling need to be replaced?
If you experience any of the following, it may be time to replace your filling:
A crack in a current filling
Tooth sensitivity to temperature, pressure, or sugar
Pain or discomfort
All or part of a current filling falling out
Abnormal pressure while chewing
Regular dental visits will help your dentist monitor your current fillings for any signs of wear and allow you to replace them before they become problematic. Regular brushing and flossing will help protect your fillings and prevent damage.
