Does Botox Treatment Hurt?
Many dentists are now offering dental Botox treatments for their patients. Botox is an injectable drug made from the botulinum toxin. When injected in small doses, it paralyzes the muscles in the face by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. It can be used to treat a variety of dental conditions, as well as minimize fine lines and wrinkles in the face.
Is Botox Painful?
When considering dental Botox, many people wonder if the treatment causes any pain or discomfort. Some people who have had Botox injections before say that they experience zero pain during the procedure, but every person is different. Your dentist will do everything they can to further minimize discomfort. For example, they will apply a topical numbing cream and/or a cold pack to the injection area. Another reason Botox treatment is almost painless is because the needles used for Botox are very small, one of the smallest sizes available. You will likely only feel a stinging or pinching sensation during injection.
Side Effects of Botox Treatment
Most side effects of Botox treatment are not serious and clear up quickly. Common side effects include muscle stiffness, muscle weakness, bruising, nausea, fatigue, itching, and rashes. Rare and more serious side effects of Botox include an allergic reaction, which manifests as redness, inflammation, or bleeding at the injection site. If you experience these side effects, you should contact your dentist right away. It’s possible to develop an allergy to Botox over time when used frequently, so listen to your dentist’s recommendation for frequency of treatment.
