What to Expect During Scaling and Root Planing.

If you have gum disease, or are at risk for developing it, your dentist may recommend a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing. This treatment removes plaque and hardened tartar from below the gumline to help stop the progression of gum disease and support healthier gums.

Deep cleaning appointments typically take one to two hours and may require more than one visit, depending on the severity of the condition.

Before the Treatment

Before your scaling and root planing procedure, the dentist or hygienist will:

  • Take X-rays to evaluate your gum tissue and bone health.

  • Examine your gums to determine the depth of infection and your specific needs.

In the days leading up to your appointment, continue brushing and flossing as usual to keep your mouth as clean as possible.

During the Treatment

To ensure your comfort, the procedure begins with numbing the area, which may involve a local anesthetic, numbing gel, or sedation.

The dental professional will then:

  • Use an ultrasonic scaler that utilizes vibration and pressurized water to break up and remove tartar.

  • Use specialized hand instruments to clean plaque and bacteria from below the gumline.

  • Smooth the root surfaces of the teeth (root planing) to discourage future bacterial buildup and help the gums reattach to the teeth.

After the Treatment

Following your deep cleaning, it’s normal to experience temporary soreness, sensitivity, mild swelling, or light bleeding. These symptoms typically improve within a few days, though full gum healing may take several weeks.

To support healing, be sure to:

  • Stick to softer foods for the first few days, avoiding hard, sticky, or spicy foods.

  • Keep up your oral hygiene–brush, floss, and use antimicrobial mouthwash.

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers as advised by your dentist.

  • Attend follow-up appointments and regular cleanings to monitor the progress and maintain the results.
