What should I do if my filling comes out?

Dental Implants vs. Bridges

Losing a filling is unexpected and can be scary, but it’s not uncommon! Fillings aren’t meant to last forever, so they come out eventually. Knowing what to do if you or your child loses a filling can help ease the anxiety that often comes with the experience.

1. Remove the filling

Remove the lost filling as quickly as possible to avoid swallowing it. Fillings cannot be reused once they fall out, so feel free to throw it away. If a crown falls out, it can sometimes be helpful for the dentist to see it, but like a filling, it cannot be reused.

2. Call your dentist

Your dentist can assess the seriousness of your situation and give you any necessary care instructions over the phone. At Midland Family Dental, we will get you in as soon as possible for a new filling to prevent any further discomfort or anxiety.

3. Protect the affected area

Until you can get a replacement filling, your tooth is more exposed than usual to harmful bacteria. To prevent further complications, keep your tooth and surrounding areas clean. Try brushing and flossing normally. If it’s painful, simply brush as gently as possible. Avoid using mouthwash, as it can irritate the affected area.

4. Watch what you eat

Until your dentist appointment, be careful what you eat and drink. Avoid foods that are:

  • Extremely hot or cold

  • Difficult to chew

  • Crunchy

  • Hard

  • Easily caught in the exposed area (small seeds, popcorn, etc.)

5. Manage the pain

Losing a filling isn’t always painful, but if you do experience discomfort, try the following:

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as aspirin or ibuprofen

  • Topical ointments such as Orajel to temporarily numb the affected area

  • Dental cement or a piece of sugar-free gum to temporarily fill the hole (these are not long-term solutions and should only be used until you can get to the dentist)
