How to Care for Dentures

Removable dentures need special care to make sure they last a long time, look their best, and remain stain-free. Take the following steps for the best denture care:

  • Thoroughly clean your dentures every day. Just as you would brush your natural teeth every day, your dentures need to be cleaned daily. Brush your dentures using a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture cleaner or hand soap or mild dish soap.

  • Handling your dentures. Handle your dentures carefully when removing and cleaning them to prevent damage to the plastic or clasps. Clean them over a soft towel or fill the sink with water, so they don’t break in case you drop them.

  • Avoid toothpaste. Don’t use toothpaste to clean your dentures. Most toothpastes contain abrasive ingredients that can damage the denture surface.

  • Avoid hot water. Using hot water to clean or store your dentures could cause them to become misshapen or warped.

  • Clean your mouth. When you remove your dentures at the end of the day, use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean your natural teeth, tongue, gums, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth.

  • Storing dentures overnight. When removing your dentures before going to sleep, you should place them in a glass of water or denture-soaking solution to store them overnight. If you store them in a denture-soaking solution, rinse your dentures before putting them back in your mouth, as these solutions contain harmful chemicals.

  • After eating. Remove your dentures and rinse them with water after eating to remove food debris.

  • Regular dentist visits. Continue to visit your dentist regularly to have your dentures professionally cleaned and to make sure they fit properly. If your dentures become loose, your dentist can adjust their fit to prevent slippage and discomfort.
