How Long Will I Have to Wear Braces?
One of the first questions people ask before getting braces is, "How long will I have to wear them?" While everyone’s orthodontic treatment is different, most patients wear braces for 18 to 24 months. Some people finish treatment in as little as 6 months, while more complex cases may take up to 3 years.
The amount of time you'll wear braces largely depends on the complexity of your case:
Mild cases (6 to 12 months): Small gaps, minor crowding, or slightly misaligned teeth.
Moderate cases (12 to 24 months): Moderate crowding, overlapping teeth, or minor bite issues.
Severe cases (24 to 36 months): Significant crowding or complex bite problems, such as severe overbites, underbites, or crossbites.
Other Factors That Affect Treatment Time
In addition to the complexity of your case, these factors also affect how fast the teeth will move:
How Well You Follow Your Treatment Plan
Patients who wear their rubber bands as instructed, attend regular adjustment appointments, and maintain good oral hygiene often complete treatment more efficiently.
Your Age
Children and teenagers typically experience faster tooth movement because their jaws are still growing. Adults can still achieve great results with braces, but treatment may take a little longer since their jawbones are fully developed.
The Type of Orthodontic Treatment
The type of braces you choose can also affect treatment time. In some mild cases, clear aligners may straighten teeth more quickly than traditional metal braces. However, traditional braces are often the most effective option for correcting more complex orthodontic problems.
What Happens After the Braces Come Off?
After your braces are removed, you will still need to wear a retainer to ensure your teeth stay in their new places. Most patients need to wear their retainer full-time for the first 3 to 6 months, then only at night after that.
