Does Teeth Whitening Damage Teeth?
If you are unhappy with your smile, teeth whitening is a safe and effective way to give it a refresh. Teeth whitening does not damage your teeth; you may experience temporary side effects after a whitening treatment, but it is safe on tooth enamel.
During a teeth whitening treatment, the whitening product is placed on your teeth and begins to dehydrate your teeth. The product then goes through the enamel and into the layer of dentin, where it works to reverse stains and discoloration by bleaching the dentin. Your teeth will naturally rehydrate themselves afterwards using saliva. While your teeth are rehydrating (which can take between two to seven days), you should avoid stain-enhancing food and beverages.
Side Effects
The whitening process does not damage teeth, but some people experience temporary tooth sensitivity afterwards. This sensitivity does not indicate permanent damage. If your teeth become sensitive after whitening, talk to your dentist about it. They may have medication or suggestions they can give you. You can opt for take-home whitening kits rather than in-office treatments because take-home kits whiten your teeth more gradually and therefore cause less sensitivity. Using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush can also help. Make sure to give your teeth enough time between whitening treatments to allow them to rehydrate.
How to Whiten Safely
Look for the ADA seal of approval. ADA-approved products have been tested for safety and effectiveness.
Always follow the instructions. Many products have different usage times, so check the instructions to ensure you don’t use a product for too long.
Talk with your dentist. Your dentist knows your teeth best. Talk to them about whether your teeth are healthy enough for whitening.
Listen to your teeth. If you have tooth sensitivity after whitening, try taking a break from treatments or shorten the time that the product is on your teeth.
