How Do Dental Implants Stay in Place?

Dental implants have quickly become a popular choice for tooth replacement. They are comfortable, inconspicuous, and last a long time. If you are thinking about getting dental implants, you might be curious about what makes them stay in place. You’ll be glad to know that dental implants are extremely secure once placed in the mouth.

How Dental Implants Stay in Place

A dental implant is a small titanium post or screw that is surgically placed in the jawbone. Implants are made of titanium, which is biocompatible. Once the implant is placed, a process called osseointegration begins, in which the bone tissue fuses to the implant. Through osseointegration, the titanium implant essentially becomes a part of your body; it becomes the root of your new artificial tooth, and it cannot be removed.

It takes approximately six weeks for the implant to fully integrate. At this point, you will return to the oral surgeon so they can attach a connecting piece called an abutment, which is used to connect the implant to the crown. Then, the crown is attached to the abutment. The crown is custom-made to fit in the appropriate spot and match the shade of your natural teeth.

How to Protect Your Crown

While the dental implant is secure in place and cannot be moved, it is possible for the crown to be cracked, broken, or even completely knocked out. To keep your crown in place and in the best shape, avoid biting down on ice or hard candies, and don’t use your teeth to open packaging. Additionally, if you are involved in sports or recreational activities, be sure to wear a mouth guard while participating to protect your crown.
